Yankees’ Shortstop Tries To Get Last All-Star Spot By Paying New Yorkers’ Subway Fares

Didi Gregorius takes his case to the streets by paying for subway rides, making burrito bowls, and giving out free umbrellas.

New York Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius is out on the streets of New York paying for random people’s subway fares and doing some other curious fan outreach.

The 27-year old is attempting to play his first All-Star game this season. He is trying to gain fan-votes to place him onto the team this year by earning the last available spot on the American League roster over Elvis Andrus (Texas), Xander Bogaerts (Boston), Logan Morrison (Tampa Bay), and Mike Moustakas (Kansas City).

One of his tactics was to pay for New Yorkers’ subway fares. He’s also been lobbying for votes on New York City tour buses, making burrito bowls at Dos Toros, giving out free umbrellas in the rain, and taking pictures with tourists and fans at Rockefeller Center.

Any tweet with the #SirDidi4Sure hashtag will count as a vote towards him for this coveted position on the team.

The Yankees are supporting Didi to the fullest, posting videos on his behalf and having their minor league affiliate supporting him on social media as well.

The Yankees have also made a deal with fans of the Colorado Rockies, saying their fans will vote for the Rockies’ Mark Reynolds for the National League team in exchange for Mile High votes for Gregorius.

If Didi ends up winning the fan vote, he will join his Yankee teammates Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez, Dellin Betances, Luis Severino, and Starlin Castro.

If he makes it onto the All Star team via this method, he will be the first Yankee to do so since Nick Swisher succeeded in winning the vote 2013.

Hopefully, this approach will show that the best way to win over the fans is to go directly to them.
