“Aish Baladi (local bread) is eaten by practically every Egyptian for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It’s so important that instead of using the Arabic word for bread (khobz) they refer to it as ‘aish’, literally life.
Bread is heavily subsidized and people will queue at government bakeries to buy 20 loaves for an Egyptian pound ($0.20). With a diet so heavily reliant on bread, many people run the risk of missing key nutrients.
High incidents of anemia in pregnant women and children are particularly dangerous and can result in miscarriages, defects and life long development problems.
Introducing the right nutrients into the diet is vital. In Luxor and across Egypt, the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is working with the Ministry of Social Solidarity, the National Nutrition Institute and the World Food Programme in helping the Egyptian government to fortify bread with iron and folic acid.
Long term solutions include educating mothers and families on what makes up a healthy diet and how to address anemia.”
