While a new Gallup poll shows that Americans disapprove of Donald Trump at nearly historic rates, the 45th president of the United States has at least one admirer: Rodrigo Duterte.
On Saturday, the President of the Philippines offered his thoughts on Trump while speaking to a Filipino community in Doha, Qatar.
According to Duterte, “Trump is a realist, a pragmatic thinker.”
He went on to address Trump’s speaking habits and gaffes, saying that “Trump is a deep man, he just pretends to be otherwise…in the case of Trump, he thinks deeply.”
Duterte made waves in September of last year when he claimed that he wanted to kill drug addicts in the same way that Adolf Hitler killed Jewish people during the Holocaust.
“Hitler massacred three million Jews,” Duterte said. “Now, there are three million drug addicts…I’d be happy to slaughter them.”
Then-president Barack Obama raised concerns over Duterte’s war on drugs — which has seen thousands of extrajudicial killings since its inception.
In response, Duterte called Obama a “son of a whore.” Not too far off from Trump’s favorite quip: son of a Kenyan.
