Could Disney be on the cusp of creating its first gay princess? Idina Menzel hopes so.
On Sunday, the 44-year-old star who voices Frozen‘s “Elsa,” told reporters at the Billboard Music Awards ceremony that she thinks the prospect of the hit animated film’s protagonist having a girlfriend is “great.”
“I think it’s great,” she said. “Disney’s just gotta contend with that. I’ll let them figure that out.”
Mendel’s remarks came after the hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend went viral on Twitter.
On April 30, writer and activist Alexis Moncado tweeted, “I hope Disney makes Elsa a lesbian princess imagine how iconic that would be,” and followed up with, “Dear @Disney, #GiveElsaAGirlfriend.”

In a post for MTV, Moncado — who created the site Feminist Culture — wrote that the post was inspired by the fact that audiences have “never been able to see the purity in a queer relationship.” She believes that “many in the LGBT community view Frozen as a metaphor for the experience of coming out and accepting who you are.”
After Moncado’s tweet picked up steam other people chimed in:
