Sanders was arrested in April 2016 when police ruled the December 2015 death by suffocation of his 2-year-old daughter Ellie a homicide.
In a strange turn of events, a man in Texas has been released from jail after his 7-year-old son confessed to his crime.
Anthony Michael Sanders, 33, stood accused of killing his 2-year-old daughter and was in jail awaiting his trial when his son confessed to having accidentally killed his sister, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Sanders was arrested in April 2016 when police ruled the December 2015 death of his 2-year-old daughter Ellie a homicide. Ellie was found suffocated to death in the Sanders’ bedroom while he was the only adult present.
Police investigators theorized that Sanders had placed his hand over his daughter’s mouth, suffocating her, possibly because he was annoyed that she had interrupted while he was playing video games.
Police described the incident at the time as, “Just a fit of rage-type deal, anger.”
Sanders was charged capital murder and was held in Tarrant County Jail awaiting trial.
Now, a confession by Sanders’ son has shown that this assessment of the death was wrong.
On August 23rd, Ellie’s mother, Cassie Wright, called the prosecutor on the case and told him that her son had said he was responsible for Ellie’s death. While she initially did not believe her son, the prosecutor decided to interview the boy, who was five at the time of his sister’s death.
During the interview the teary child explained that he had rolled a “heavy” pillow onto the face of his little sister.
The boy said that the pillow had something zipped inside of it that made it too heavy for him to lift off of his sister.
In previous counseling sessions the boy said he killed his sister, but his remarks were not taken seriously.
In light of the boy’s confession, the state dropped its charges on Sanders, and he was released from jail on September 13 after spending nearly a year and a half in jail.
Tim Moore, Sanders’ defense attorney, said his client was “elated” that the charge was dismissed.
