Miles Copeland Jr. was the son of a small town doctor in Alabama that never graduated from college. When World War II broke out, Copeland was 25 years old and bumming around the country as a jazz musician, but he joined up with the National Guard and quickly worked his way into the ranks of the Counterintelligence Corps, a precursor to the CIA.

With the Counterintelligence Corps, Copeland was stationed in the United Kingdom, where he gained top secret clearance and was involved in the planning of the Allied invasion of Normandy Beach.

It was there that he met Lorraine Adie, a woman working in the British espionage department, Special Operations Executive. The two spies quickly fell in love and were married by the end of 1942.

When the CIA was formed after the war, in 1947, Copeland was in on the ground floor. He was posted to Damascus, Syria where he helped carry out the March 1949 Syrian coup d'état that replaced the democratically elected government with Syrian Army chief of staff Husni al-Za'im.

He then bounced around the Middle East, working to install pro-American governments across the region. He was even involved in the 1953 technical coup d'état against the Prime Minister of Iran, Mohammad Mosaddegh, which set the stage for the later 1979 Islamic Revolution.

During this time, Lorraine had begun work in archeology around the regions she and her husband lived in. Through intense research and fieldwork, she became the foremost expert on the Palaeolithic period of the Middle East.

Copeland left the CIA in 1957 and became an intelligence consultant. Lorraine became a well-respected archaeologist working closely with the University College London Institute of Archaeology.

While you likely don't know the story of this power couple, you might now that of their son: Stewart Copeland.

Stewart was the drummer for the seminal British band The Police. Stewart also worked on a number of other projects and is regarded as one of the greatest drummers of all time.

Stewart's siblings, Miles Copeland III and Ian Copeland, also went on to influence music history, with Miles managing The Police and going on to be a major musical executive and Ian becoming a music promoter who helped launch the new wave movement in the United States.

Examples like these show how brilliance often doesn't arrive from nowhere. Interesting people often have parents with fascinating lives. Many of these incredible people just so happen to be parents of celebrities.

Here are some other stories that show that the lives of the parents of celebrities can often be even more interesting than that of their celebrity offspring.
