Samsung recently filed a patent for wearable technology, such as a smartwatch, that will project the device’s display right onto the user’s skin.
In the patent, Samsung describes a processor that maps the surface area of the user’s hand, fingers, or arm, then projects images from the smart device onto the skin based on those boundaries. The wearer would then be able to control the device by interacting with the images projected onto his or her skin.
The patent shows several options for what those projected displays could look like and how they could be useful. For example, the device could project a keypad onto your arm, which makes it easier to type.
Similarly, the device could project a map that would be larger and more detailed than any map that would fit onto a smartwatch. This would also eliminate the need to zoom in, like we have to do from time to time on a standard iPhone.
Furthermore, the patent describes several other fun features: Messages or pictures drawn on the projected area on your skin could also be displayed on the device’s screen. And if you need a larger view of the screen, the device would project its display onto a surface larger than your skin, such as a wall or a door.
Interestingly, the patent also contains designs for a headset projector that would function as a virtual reality device. In one example, the headset projects a user interface screen onto household objects like a TV and a refrigerator, making them interactive in the virtual world.
As exciting as developments like this may be, the patent was only filed on May 5, so it might be a while before we’re able to see this device in the action.
But after the Google Glass flop, the only popular wearable tech right now is the Fitbit. Even the Apple Watch essentially only acts as a separate, smaller iPhone screen. If Samsung’s plan takes off, maybe wearable technology will indeed be the future.
