A vestige of World Fairs past, when constructed Seattle’s Space Needle was the tallest structure west of the Mississippi River. Designers Edward Carlson and John Graham Jr. were successful in drawing in visitors with their futuristic, flying saucer-inspired edifice: in its 1962 unveiling, over 20,000 people used the elevators in a single day.
