Cloud Formations: Fallstreak Hole

The fallstreak hole, also known as hole punch cloud or skypunch, is characterized by a circular hole formed within cirrocumulus or altocumulus clouds. These holes form when some of a cloud’s water droplets freeze into ice crystals. As the ice crystals grow, they begin to fall from the cloud’s main structure, creating a hole within the cloud. An aircraft passing through the cloud often begins this process.
