Ivanka Trump — a senior White House adviser with her very own office in the West Wing — said that she “tries to stay out of politics.”

In an interview with “Fox and Friends” on Monday, the president’s daughter replied to a question concerning her father’s controversial Twitter habits:

“You know, I try to stay out of politics. I — his political instincts are phenomenal. He did something that no one could have imagined he’d be able to accomplish. There were very few who thought, early on. I feel blessed to have been part of the ride from day one and before. But he did something pretty remarkable. But I don’t profess to be a political savant, so I leave the politics to other people.”

Except, that is, when she’s giving a big speech at the Republican National Convention, or hosting a roundtable on human trafficking at the White House, or sitting in on high-level policy meetings.

“That’s like an assistant baseball coach saying that he ‘tries to stay out of baseball,'” CNN analyst Chris Cillizza wrote. “Or the managing editor of a news organization saying she “tries to stay out of the journalism.”

Some commentators suggested that this is Ivanka Trump’s way of telling the world that she’s giving up on influencing her father.

“If her success rate is any indication (see: health care, pulling out of the Paris climate accord), it may just be that hard to effect change in the Trump administration,” Vogue journalist Michelle Ruiz, wrote. “And if she can’t do it, can anyone?”
